$600 would buy you at least six of the shirts I buy from a designer in London who used to work for Juicy Couture and started her own shop. It's the same reason I don't buy anything that's part of a series and called a "limited edition". there's no guarantee with something that is known to be mass produced. The problem is (aside from there being no real way to verify the authenticity for certain anybody can buy surplus blanks of any mass prod label like Brockum), three years from now, someone will bust out crates of these unsold and the price will drop to $5 a piece (but they're probably the guy on ebay who says "one remaining" and then reposts the listing for $600 every time some sucker buys one $600 x 500 = $300,000 for a box of shirts that cost less than $2k to make, even less if they're knockoffs). and I say that as someone who has designed and purchased one-offs made with very high quality blanks (Stedman ST9400, etc.). There's no actual scarcity to any of these. anything above $25 for a mass produced concert tee, especially one made from the cheapest blanks concert tee makers could find (and screening them with cheap plastisol inks versus water-soluble, discharge ink screen processing), is really a racket.
Granted, everything is ultimately "what the market will bear" but. I sourced high end tees for my own silkscreening and have some friends in fashion design who make tees for rockstars, and they cost nowhere near these prices.
It's not a curated, monitored auction house like Heritage Auctions and a ton of stuff is fake.īut I can pinpoint: A couple years back there was some article about how idiots like Kanye were buying up so-called vintage tees for $2500 a pop, so some people obviously read that article and decided to capitalize.
